Matariki hunga nui, Matariki ahunga nui, Matariki manako nui. To celebrate the Māori New Year, Spark NZ rolled out a suite of resources for followers on social media. This digital wallpaper was designed to honour Matariki; a time to gather with whānau, friends, and community, reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look toward the future.
There are nine whetū in the Matariki star cluster. This work is inspired by Pōhutukawa, the whetū associated with the memory of lost loved ones and cherished hononga that transcend generations. At the heart of this design are interwoven koru, symbolising my whakapapa, Māoritanga, and the continuous thread of life. These flowing forms represent the closeness of whānau and my place within it as the embodiment of all those who came before. The colour palette favours deeper tones, echoing the darkening skies of Matariki.
