Client: The National Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa
Deliverables: Brand Identity for the Biodiversity Research Centre

In collaboration with: Michel Tuffery
and the Natural History team of Te Papa
Te Papa Tongarewa is an iconic institution with a mission to honour, protect, and celebrate the rich and dynamic heritage of Aotearoa. Te Papa Tongarewa houses a vast natural history collection, including specimens found nowhere else in the world. The branding design honours the collection by incorporating stylised representations of native flora and fauna selected by Te Papa experts and rendered in tones drawn from te taiao. These representations reflect the museum’s commitment as a kaitiaki of Aotearoa’s ecological heritage and the ongoing production of new knowledges.
The branding draws from the triangular patterns in the soffit and exterior facade.
These geometric forms echo the use of triangles in whakairo and tāniko to represent maunga. By stacking the diamonds on top of one another, the form of waharua kōpito
is evoked which has many meanings but, in this application, refers to the meeting of people and ideas as well as a commitment to te taiao, which is fitting for a natural history research centre.
